OWEN BROTHERS CATERING EXCLUSIVE BLOG: DAY OF THE DEAD

Happy Halloween everyone…. Too soon? I know but it’s not far away, everyone is talking about Halloween. One of my favourites (because of all the sweets).

My other favourite festival at this time of year is The Mexican Festival of the Dead which is celebrated over a weekend. Day of the Dead is a Mexican holiday observed throughout Mexico and around the world in other cultures, although it is not celebrated in England. The holiday focuses on gatherings of family and friends to pray for and remember friends and family members who have passed. The celebration takes place on October 31st, November 1st and November 2nd. There are so many different accounts of what Halloween, or All Hallows’ Eve as it is sometimes called, actually means or how it started. Everyone loves some pumpkin carving too at Halloween. Pumpkins are not only great for carving but also for eating, especially when they are in season between September and December.

This is also a great way to do savoury Halloween food. We love getting creative with sandwiches such as creating Pimento Cheese and Pumpernickel sandwiches in the shape of bats. We’ve also used different coloured toppings to create different effects. We also have spooky cakes and other ghoulishly delicious treats. Honouring the deceased using sugar skulls we can create nice little snacks which will go great aesthetically with our Mexican food, along with every other type of food. Such as a selection of Enchiladas, Nachos, Burritos, fajitas and Mexican chilli bean. Whatever your celebrations are we hope you eat and drink and are very merry!
